Valentine's day can trigger so many emotions. For some it can bring feelings of excitement, while it can be gut wrenching for others. If you’ve been single for a while or recently experienced a breakup, it’s likely the latter.
What if you were intentional and set aside special time for yourself this Valentine’s Day? What if you choose to make it all about you?
If you’re anything like many other women, you’re probably so busy growing a successful business, investing in personal growth, raising a family, or creating a legacy that you don’t create time for you. The good news is, there is always an opportunity to switch gears and learn to celebrate yourself.
Why is it important to celebrate yourself? It’s a form of self-care that can improve your health and overall wellbeing. A study conducted on 223 Black women in the United States found self-care can improve the negative relationship between stress and health.
I want to encourage you to pause and give yourself permission to make space for you. Here’s how to make “me time” special and not just an afterthought this Valentines.
Every woman is beautiful in her own right and should feel so as often as possible! However, when you’re busy tending to your career and putting the needs of everyone else first, you may not always feel beautiful. A photoshoot is the perfect way to celebrate yourself and tap into your feminine energy.
Buy yourself a glam outfit and book a photoshoot in the coming weeks. If you’re in the Georgia axis, consider booking a shoot with Tammy McGarity Photography.
Not only are photoshoots a fun way to self-care, but you’ll have pictures that remind you of your timeless beauty, too.
One of many fun things to do to celebrate yourself is taking a COVID-friendly trip! You can take a solo trip or plan one with friends depending on your mood. Think about what you need right now; do you need alone time or to connect with loved ones?
The good thing is you don’t have to travel too far; there are several places within the U.S. you can travel to.
Need some ideas?
RV and Camping/Glamping trip: Camping can be so much fun, especially when you do it with the girls. Some scenic locations to camp include Acadia National Park in Maine, Big Bend National park in Texas, and Glacier National Park in Montana.
Wine Country: This is an ideal destination if you want a serene getaway to kick back and reflect. You’ll also have access to top-tier wine, which you can sip while sighting the Blue Ridge Mountains nearby if you choose the Virginia location. Wine Country lodges are also available in California, Texas, and Washington.
Remote Cabin: For those who are looking for an intimate trip in the wilderness, consider a remote cabin trip. New York, Colorado, North Carolina, and Estes Park are a few locations you can choose from.
Timber Cove Resort: If you like high-end getaways, you’ll enjoy a touch of luxury at Timber Cove Resort. All you have to do is pack your bags and go as it’s a fully serviced location. You'll get endless ocean views, organic food, access to a bar and lounge, as well as day trips.
New Orleans: if you’ve been here before, you know it’s one of the most unique destinations in the United States. You’ll enjoy some of the best cuisines and can end your valentines day night cruising on a riverboat.
Don’t forget to get a COVID test before traveling, bring masks, and social distance. You may also feel more comfortable sticking to destinations with plenty of space and outdoor accommodation.
In-House Spa Day
Another way to celebrate yourself this Valentines is to organize a spa day at home. This is a chance to whip out your DIY skills and put together something really nice for yourself. Bring the same energy you would if you were planning it for your best friend or mom.
Here are a few new activities you can add to your spa day if you haven’t tried them before.
A sound bath is kind of what it sounds like; a bath that uses sound waves to give you a meditative experience. It’s different from your typical bubble bath (which is great too) and can give you the mental break you need.
Why do a sound bath? Immersing yourself in sounds and vibrations can help cleanse and heal you.
Some sources used for sound baths include singing bowls, percussion, gongs, rattles chimes, or a human voice.
If you choose to do a sound bath, you can find an instructor that offers 1:1 services or pop-up sound baths in your area. A great place to start if you live in Georgia is Secret River Sounds as they offer home services, so will come to you.
For those who live in other states, if you type “sound bath near me” or “sound bath therapy” in Google, you should find options you can work with.
Alternatively, look for a sound bath recording online, read more about how they work, and do one for yourself. You can also combine your sound bath with sound meditation, which also uses instruments to make you more present and increase awareness.
Order an in-house massage--you deserve it! You won’t need to worry about getting ready to go to a spa as they’ll bring everything to you. Some popular massages to consider include:
Hot stone massage
Deep tissue massage
The right one for you depends on your needs and how you want to feel. Some address problem areas while others aim to leave you feeling energized.
Session With a Therapist
Some people are under the misconception that you only need therapy when you’re going through a difficult time. Well, this is simply untrue! Therapy is also a form of preventative care; it can make good mental health even better. A few well-known benefits of psychotherapy include:
Enhancing your relationships
Improving spiritual wellbeing
Providing access to unbiased support
Improving symptoms of depression and anxiety
Helping with obsessions and compulsions
Equipping you with tools to handle life’s challenges
Perhaps you already started therapy but stopped. Maybe you haven’t yet found the right therapist for you. This is a reminder to keep looking until you find the right therapist; it isn’t a decision you’ll regret. I provide therapy services, so consider booking a free consultation with me to see whether we’re a good fit.
Love Yourself in Your Language
When nobody else celebrates you, learn to celebrate yourself. A way to do this is through loving yourself in your love language. Do you feel most loved when you receive gifts? Buy yourself something nice (within your budget) this Valentine's.
Do words of affirmation make you feel smitten? Write yourself a love letter or poem. Go the extra mile by having it designed and framed or write it in a card.
Is quality time important to you? Sit with yourself and doing things that bring you immense joy––uninterrupted.
Think carefully about what will make you feel most loved during this season and do it for yourself. YOU are worth it and you deserve it!
On that note, remember to celebrate every day of your life––not just Valentine's Day!
